The casual interview with John Tory began by him saying,
“With the kind of problems the City of Toronto faces, none of the other candidates are “equipped” to turn this city around. Toronto is a huge organization with a $6.5 billion dollar budget, and we have fallen victims to career politicians where ostensibly progress grinds to a halt where the result is deterioration. I have a reputation as “a man of action” no matter what organization or business environment I’ve had the privilege of being involved with.”
Mr. Tory is actually being very humble. He has led record fundraising campaigns (75.5 million dollars while Chair for the United Way in 2001) for organizations such as the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation, Canadian Football League, Osgoode Law School, University of Toronto, Canadian Art Foundation, and Crimestoppers to name just a few. The Association of Fundraising Professionals named John Tory Volunteer fundraiser of the year 2002.
Mr. Tory brings a wealth of experience and a record of achievement to his candidacy as a result of many successful years of service as businessman, lawyer, volunteer and community activist. He has lead, managed and obtained results from large complex organizations as he did as President and CEO of Rogers Cable Inc. He has proven his ability to achieve consensus and to take the required actions when necessary. Packing a Bachelor of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall he held positions as partner, Managing partner, and member of the Executive Committee of one of Canada’s largest law firms. His career ventured from interviewer/newscaster on CFTR & CHFI radio, Principal secretary to the Office of Premier William Davis and Rogers Media Inc.
“ These have taught me about the ways in which different levels of government can and must work together for the benefit of the city of Toronto. We need a good partnership with the Ontario Government,” said Tory.
John became involved with the Ukrainian community at functions such as the “Help us Help the Children” at the CBC, The Bloor West Village Ukrainian Festival, and St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Community Homes. In a recent conversation with Ted Woloshyn, the radio broadcaster said “I had the pleasure of being seated at the same table as Mr. Tory at the Yuschenko (former P.M. for Ukraine) banquet at the Royal York Hotel, and found John to be an intelligent upstanding gentleman.”
John Tory intends to tackle crime by adding 400 new policemen. He also intends to confront homelessness, expand public transit and reduce traffic gridlock, clean up bureaucratic red tape at City Hall, stop the Manhattanization of Toronto’s neighbourhoods, deal with the impending garbage and waste issues in the city, and clean up the parks and streets.
“ I am small “c”conservative with a cool head, and deliver on expectations. I will make Torontonians feel included in City Government and their City.”
